“What you’re doing is great, it’s definitely needed.”

I’ve heard this numerous times from companies and employers when it comes to talking about what it is that I do with Suiting Green. They all seem to see the benefit of hiring from the military community, but the more I hear it, the more it starts to feel like an empty, “Thank you for your service” line.

So, why is it that what Suiting Green does is so great and needed, yet you’re not willing to actually step up to the plate and hire me to come improve your company’s military hiring program? Is it because you think it’s one of those things that would work well for another company but not for yours? Is it because of preconceived notions about military experience, military skill translation, or just the military in general?

Maybe I’m just not doing a good job of explaining why hiring a human capital consultant is beneficial to your company.

If that’s the case, let’s talk about that.

Hiring a human capital consultant firm to come in and work with your company has some solid benefits, but it’s not a quick fix to solve any problems you may have with bringing in top talent.

To start, we will look at how you are currently doing things. We’ll assess your processes. How do you approach the recruiting of people? How do you attract the military community to come work for you? What does your onboarding process look like? Do you have anyone from your employee resource groups (if you have them) come in during the onboarding process to assist new hires with similar backgrounds integrate into your organization? What do you do to promote employee engagement? How are your retention rates, particularly as it pertains to former military professionals or military spouses within your company?

Once we have taken a look at all of the above, we’ll ask about your company’s goals with hiring? What are your specific needs? And, most importantly, we want to know what your “Why” is behind hiring from the military community. Understanding this piece helps to determine how well that is passed down from your CEO to the people doing the recruiting and hiring. If the “Why” doesn’t go beyond the executive offices, I can tell you right now, based on experience, you don’t have a solid military hiring program. As I’ve said in a past posting, all you’ve done at this point is develop something that “briefs well.” Essentially, you’ve developed the best thing since sliced bread, but haven’t told anyone else about it.

Now that we’ve established what your company’s goals, needs, and why are, we can get to work. Again, it’s not a fast solution, but it is one that will make a difference for your company, and the people you hire from the military community. We will work with you, as leadership, and your people, to start establishing programs and policies that make sense, are easily understood, and help build your company name as a company that is not just military friendly, but actually Military Ready.

We will introduce you to a variety of programs that will bring in some of the best and brightest people to your business. We will, essentially, teach you how to fish instead of just giving you a fish. Not only will we teach you how to fish, we will continue to be there as a resource to check in on you and assist as needed even after we have finished our initial work. We aren’t just a “one and done” type of company. We want to ensure you are set up for success with a program that will increase your business’s productivity, builds a solid bench of talent you can pull from, and creates a succession plan that actually provides peace of mind for everyone.

So, why shouldn’t you hire Suiting Green? If your business is only looking to hire entry-level, minimum wage jobs with no potential for internal growth, we’re not right for you. If you don’t want to improve the diversity in your company, you can bypass us. If your company is not interested in growing, increasing your revenue, or being known as a leader in your industry for your hiring practices, we can’t help you. And, lastly, if you feel that hiring from the military community won’t benefit your company, we are definitely not the right people to work with.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, I want your company to succeed. I want to see you hire from the incredibly talented, passionate, and diverse talent stream that is the military community successfully. Not only that, but I also want to see the military talent you do hire, whether that is transitioning service members, former military professionals, military spouses, or members of the Guard or Reserve, thrive within your organization and make it better than it was before they got there. That’s the kind of appreciation I want to see within businesses that are Military Ready.

I will tell you this, hiring Suiting Green is not a cheap option. However, when you look at the cost of recruiting, hiring, and onboarding someone who turns out to be a “bad hire” and either leaves or is terminated within nine to twelve months, forcing you to rinse and repeat this process, we are going to end up saving you thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of dollars. If you’re okay with your employee turnover rate, and with spending tons of money on the cycle of hoping to get the right employees, then I’ll save you the time and let you know we aren’t going to work with you. To be honest, as I used to tell trainees in basic training, “I can’t fix stupid.”

If you’re willing to open your mind and explore the possibility that hiring from the military talent stream will greatly benefit your company and your employees, we are the company to help you get started on this path. Let’s walk the path together and make a difference!
